Today it is the world of digitalisation. We might have seen from a small shop to a big mall, everyone is providing printed bill which takes a fraction of second to create the bill of many products. Do you know with the help of which?  A Barcode

What is a BARCODE?

An optical representation of data by a pattern of black and white lines of varying width that can be read by a scanner. It is used for quick identification of products. Previously, it was used in stores and warehouses but now it is used everywhere like medical, digital fields, banking etc.

Barcode – History

It was invented by Norman Joseph Woodland and Bernard Silver and patented in the US in 1952. It is based on the Morse code that was thick and thin bars. However, it takes twenty years to become successful.

Barcode – uses.

It has many uses in every field. If you are running a store. You need to track all the items in the shop that it is available or not for the customers. Previously for this, we have to move near the shelves and analyse about them. By doing all these you came to a conclusion that what you have to reorder your stock. If you are running a large mall then obviously difficulties will be more.

This technology makes the revolution, using this the store and warehouses can help to solve these problems. By this, you can keep track of all record on a computer. You can also change the price of the product easily without using the new price tags on the packet and boxes. You can instantly mark when the stock of certain product running low and have to reorder. There is more accuracy in the barcode so you can also track if the product is missed form its place, means it reduce the possibility of being stolen.

It saves time and enhances the ability to work so you can serve more customers in less time.  As a result, it is also used in instant payment services. Like paytm, phonepe, mobikwik etc.

Barcode – working.

a scanner for scanning the barcode

There is no use of barcode if we didn’t have the technology to read them. Barcode scanner is used to scan the barcode and feed the data into the computer system.

  1. Scanning barcode by a scanner, it emits a light on the barcode.
  2. Light reflects back to the photoelectric cell

Note: – white light reflects more than black light.

  1. By the reflecting light, it generates a pattern in it.
  2. An electric circuit attached to the scanner which converts these pattern into decimal numbers [0 to 9].
  3. These numbers are sent to the computer and it converts it into the information.

This helps in maintaining the record of anything easier.
