What is a BARCODE?
An optical representation of data by a pattern of black and white lines of varying width that can be read by a scanner. It is used for quick identification of products. Previously, it was used in stores and warehouses but now it is used everywhere like medical, digital fields, banking etc.

It was invented by Norman Joseph Woodland and Bernard Silver and patented in the US in 1952. It is based on the Morse code that was thick and thin bars. However, it takes twenty years to become successful.

There is no use of barcode if we didn’t have the technology to read them. Barcode scanner is used to scan the barcode and feed the data into the computer system.
- Scanning barcode by a scanner, it emits a light on the barcode.
- Light reflects back to the photoelectric cell
Note: – white light reflects more than black light.
- By the reflecting light, it generates a pattern in it.
- An electric circuit attached to the scanner which converts these pattern into decimal numbers [0 to 9].
- These numbers are sent to the computer and it converts it into the information.
This helps in maintaining the record of anything easier.
